A little preparation makes the first visit from a new support worker calmer and more useful. Use this checklist to get ready.

Starting with a new provider can feel like a big step. These are the things that help the first visit go well.

Before the visit

  • Your goals. What would you like support to help you do? Big or small, write it down.
  • Your routine. When do you like to get up, eat and go out? What's the best time for support?
  • Health information. A list of medications, allergies and anything your worker should know in an emergency.
  • Your plan details. Your plan dates, how it's managed, and your plan manager's details.
  • Access. Parking, keys, pets and anything else about getting into your home.

On the day

  • Have someone you trust with you if that helps.
  • Ask questions. A good provider will be happy to answer them.
  • Say what you don't want as well as what you do.

Afterwards

Think about how it felt. If something wasn't right, tell your provider. It's your support, and it should work for you.
